Fig 1.1 – A screen capture of the main search of the Product Catalogue.

The main search page of the Product Catalogue is made up of several elements to assist the user to find the product(s) that they are searching for. At the top of the page are the navigation menus that allow the user to navigate between pages on the web site. Each page has a header, which indicates where the user is in the search process, along with a “Product Search Help?” icon, which provides the user Help in using the interface. In the primary pane of the page the user can see the different input fields they can use to conduct their search along with several hyperlinks to additional support pages. In the secondary pane the user can see a list of all core suppliers which are hyperlinked to their own product page within the catalogue.

Search For - Is a user-input field that allows the user to enter data directly into the search engine to assist in refining the search.

Product Catalogue - Search Engine The user uses the Search For field on the main search screen to qualify and refine the product(s) that they are searching for. The Search For input box allows the user to type any number of possible criteria when attempting to search for a product. Data that can be entered may include but not be limited to:

  • A product name
  • Product SKU
  • Keywords found in the product description
  • A manufacturer name

Selection - Is a pick list, with options of All, Product Name, Product Code, Product Description, that the user can select from to make a more refined search. This item is usually selected from when using the Search For input field to narrow or broaden your search criteria.

Using - Is a pick list, with options of Any of the Words Entered, All of the Words Entered, The Exact Phrase Entered or Boolean (text contains AND/OR), that the user can use to again narrow or broaden their search. Any of the Words Entered will result in the search engine using any of the words entered into the Search For field in any placement so long as the word format matches. All of the Words Entered will search for all of the words and only return results so long as all of the words entered into the Search For field are found. If any or all of the words are missing the results will be negative. The Exact Phrase Entered will have the search engine searching for exact references to what the user typed in the Search For field. If the phrase does not match exactly the results will be returned negative. A Boolean query allows the user to control the search dependencies by placing the ANDs and ORs in the search phrase that into the Search For field. An example: Search For - Covers AND shoes OR bouffants.
